February 6, 3pm: Italy’s Rising Stars For this seminar, we’ll be taking a look at—and a taste of!—some of Italy’s hottest wine regions, areas that have yet to hit the mainstream market but are making outstanding wines of world class. We’ll check in with wineries in Basilicata, Umbria, Abruzzo and Piedmont, and taste wines made from grapes like aglianico, sagrantino, montepulciano d’abruzzo, and falanghina.
February 13, 3pm: Cal/Ital Showdown With California’s Italian heritage and maturing wine industry, many wineries are looking back at their roots and producing wines made of the original grapes planted by their Italian forebears. Sangiovese, zinfandel, barbera, and pinot grigio are all grown and bottled in California, but do they shine when compared to the “originals” from Italy? We’ll do a comparative tasting and find out!
February .20, 3pm: Location, Location, Location: Why Vineyards Matter One of the most unique things about grapes, when compared to other agricultural produce, is that they really reflect their location in their taste. Wines made from particular vineyards are the most prized in the wine world because of this, whether from France, California, Italy, or elsewhere. It’s called “gout de terroir,” or the taste of place, and it is what separates the merely good from the truly great. Italy, with more unique grape varieties than any other nation, can teach us much about site specificity, from the sub-alpine North to the sun scorched South. Terroir is the Holy Grail of wine, and we’ll taste it!
Feb. 27, 3pm: What a Difference a Degree Makes: Effects of Climate on Wine Style Italy presents a uniquely broad range of wines, not only because of the unparalleled diversity of grapes, but also because of the geography, which ranges from high Alpine in the northern part to the desertlike climes of Sicily. And it shows in the wines, which can have the distinctive snap and mineral notes of cool climates, to the lush, unctuous fruitiness of warm zones. This tasting will provide insights into typical wines of cool, temperate, and warm Italian wine zones.
